News - Lick the Spoon named Cirencester Business of the Year 2011

Cotswold Chocolatier Lick the Spoon has been named Cirencester Business of the Year (under 25 employees) at the inaugural Cirencester Business awards ceremony held Friday 20th May 2011 at the Royal Agricultural College. The awards were launched by Cirencester Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Town Council to promote Cirencester businesses and were presented by BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Vernon Harwood. Lick the Spoon were also presented with the award for PR Campaign of the year.

The judges highlighted Lick the Spoon’s high growth level from a startup business in the depths of the recession, establishing both new production and retail premises as well as their commitment to staff training

Lick the Spoon’s Creative Director Diana Short said “We are delighted to win this award. We recognised that something very special was happening in Cirencester and wanted to be part of that. The town has undergone a real transformation in the last two years. Sympathetic redevelopment of the town’s shopping areas together with an exceptionally high level of independent retailers makes it a wonderful Town to visit and to do business in”.

Lick the Spoon’s flagship store is situated on the corner of historic Black Jack Street and the new Post Office mews. The gas works on Black Jack Street earlier this year led Lick the Spoon to create “Black Jack rubble” as a promotional chocolate give away to counter the access difficulties. “We use our creativity and ability to turn on a pin to create a positive from even the most difficult situations” explained Lick the Spoon’s Director Matthew Short. It was this innovative approach to marketing that led to the judges presenting Lick the Spoon with the PR campaign of the year award.

Lick the Spoon intend to use their awards as part of their ongoing efforts to promote Cirencester as both a fantastic place to visit and to do business in. Lick the Spoon are now stocked by many of the big name London stores and use tasting opportunities and shows to cross promote their Cirencester store.

“2011 is a critical year for many businesses and the recent regeneration of Cirencester has many of the attributes that Mary Portas is trying to champion in her new role as government adviser” explained Matthew. “It has a high proportion of independent retailers and producers and has managed to seamlessly merge two thousand years of history with stylish new shopping areas and pedestrianised walkways without losing it’s identity. Yet it has gained a real sense of vibrance. Cirencester truly is the ancient and modern business and retail capital of the Cotswolds”.
Lick the Spoon have their flagship retail store in Black Jack Street, Cirencester and sell 95% of their own products made using traditional artisan techniques in their production facility at Corsham in the South of the Cotswolds.
